Easy Method of Estimating Materials for Roadway Projects

Date: 4/27/2010
Time: 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Location: RIDOT Maintenance Facility, Training Room
360 Lincoln Avenue
City & State: Warwick, RI
Description: This workshop is for employees involved in roadway operations, maintenance and repair, from crew workers up to supervisors. This one-day session will look at most of the common operations and projects in local agency roadway activities and how to determine how much material to order to complete the job.

The course will look at how to determine areas (in square feet, square yards, etc.) in a practical layman’s manner for projects such as ordering geotextiles for a roadway project or quantities for asphalt/chip seal projects. It covers calculating volumes (in cubic yards, cubic feet, etc.) for activities such as ordering concrete or backfill for culvert projects. It will cover determining slopes in a simple, easy to understand approach and will also include ratios (40:1, 50:1) such as mixing oil and gas in any quantities for two cycle equipment.

The only requirement is a good attitude and a calculator you know how to work. All the material is presented in a straightforward, non-technical manner. Please bring a calculator.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
