2026 Snowplow Rhodeo & Driver Training

RIPWA's 2026 Driver Training Event, held on Thursday, July 16th was a tremendous success and a true reflection of what makes the Rhode Island Public Works Association so special. From the moment the day began, there was a shared sense of purpose, teamwork, and commitment that carried throughout every activity.

The event brought together public works professionals from Rhode Island and volunteers from across New England, all united by a common goal: improving safety, sharpening skills, and supporting one another. Experienced volunteers generously gave their time and expertise to create a hands-on learning environment where participants could build confidence, exchange knowledge, and strengthen their abilities behind the wheel.

Beyond the valuable training, the day was about camaraderie. Colleagues from different communities had the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and build relationships that extend well beyond the classroom and training course. It was inspiring to see so many individuals willing to lend a hand, mentor others, and contribute to the success of the event.

Safety remained at the heart of every exercise and discussion. Through practical instruction and real-world scenarios, participants reinforced the importance of safe driving practices that protect not only public works employees but also the communities they serve every day.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to every volunteer, instructor, organizer, and participant who dedicated their time and energy to making this event such an outstanding success. Your commitment to excellence, professionalism, and continuous learning is what makes our association stronger.

This was more than just a training event—it was a celebration of collaboration, service, and the shared mission of keeping our roads, our crews, and our communities safe. We look forward to building on this momentum and seeing everyone again at future RIPWA events.

2026 Driver Training

This event provides an excellent opportunity for Rhode Island Department of Public Works municipal employees to train, maintain, and test their skills and knowledge across a variety of activities.

Teams of two participants are evaluated through a pre-trip inspection, a safety quiz, and a snowplow slalom course. The safety quiz assesses participants’ understanding of best practices, regulations, and procedures related to winter operations and equipment use. The slalom challenges drivers with real world scenarios, including backing up in tight spaces and navigating sharp turns. Barrels and cones are strategically placed throughout the course, and points are deducted for any contact.

To recognize outstanding performance, awards are presented to participants who choose to compete, although participation in the competition is not mandatory. The winning team may also receive a scholarship to attend the APWA Western Snow & Ice Conference, National Snow Roadeo, and Winter Maintenance Supervisor Training in Colorado(www.westernsnowandice.com).
